Call of the Sea is an educational nonprofit with the mission to inspire youth to unleash their potential through experiential, environmental education under sail. Our vision is to empower generations of students to become environmental stewards and transform their world through sailing.

Call of the Sea (COTS)  is a 501(c)(3) and was founded in 1985 by Alan Olson and a group of local sailors to provide Bay Area youth an opportunity to sail traditional tall ships, investigate the local marine environment, connect to the Bay’s rich maritime history, and inspire them to be stewards of the sea and earth.

In 2004, COTS merged with a group headed by Ken Neal and in 2007 acquired the schooner Seaward. The Executive Directorship was turned over to Charles Hart in 2011. In the past ten years, Seaward has served over 60,000+ students, and now sails with an average of 5,000+ students a year.

In January 2015, COTS merged with Educational Tall Ship Inc. (ETS), the organization Alan Olson created to build the Matthew Turner in Sausalito. Through the community-driven construction of the 132 foot tall ship Matthew Turner, Call of the Sea continues to cultivate the maritime tradition of the San Francisco Bay Area by engaging people with their local waters.

COTS also merged with the Golden Gate Tall Ship Society (founded in 1985) shortly after the merger with ETS. This non-profit organization was dedicated to raising on-board scholarship funds for students and bringing awareness of tall ships to the Bay Area.

Call of the Sea currently offers marine environmental educational programs to bay area youth onboard Seaward. Once completed, Matthew Turner will provide additional opportunities for students of all ages to learn from our unique, out-of-the-classroom sailing platform in 2018.

The Eric Reyes Foundation is a non-profit organization established to engage at-risk youth through community involvement. The organization is committed to the future of our youth by inspiring students with academic resources helping them achieve his or her academic potential. We empower the students with education to become lifelong learners with positive goals. Our mission is to engage youth an provide education resources to help them achieve their academic potential.

This after school tutoring program provides free tutoring sessions at a school site for students who need one-on-one help with their homework and assignments. Tutoring will help increase students motivation and attitude so he or she is able to reach full academic potential.

In 2018, the Florence Douglas Center (FDC) will enter its 41st year of serving the community. Founded in 1977, the FDC is a 14,000 sq. ft. city owned facility located in the central core area of Vallejo providing social, educational, recreational, health, nutritional and consumer advice, counseling, and activities. The FDC is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit, multi-purpose, all-inclusive, service center that directly provides over 50 regular programs to seniors. It operates with minimal professional staff, and the assistance of a large pool of volunteers. The Vallejo Senior Citizens’ Council Inc., established in 1974, is responsible for oversight and management of the FDC operations.

Mission Statement

• To foster and promote programs and services for the charitable, educational, social, and recreational needs of persons 50 years of age and over.
• To be the community focal point for senior services and programs.
• To provide recreational, educational and social activities, and a nutrition program
• To provide an extensive information and referral service, coordinating services with other agencies serving Solano County.

Tutors will work with K-5 students at this local elementary school in a variety of subjects, but particularly English & Math. 

Tutoring occurs during the school day: 

8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

(except Wednesday, classes are dismissed @ 1:30 p.m.)

The Oakland IMC is one of approximately 300 Seafarer's Clubs worldwide. We support the merchant mariner during his/her (usually) short stay in the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Area. We are an ecumenical group sponsored and staffed by volunteers from the Episcopal Diocese of California, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Oakland, the Sierra Pacific Lutheran Synod, the American Baptist Church and the Korean Presbyterian Church. We are a non-profit group. Our support comes from individual and corporate donations, The International Transportation Federation, and private donations from our many friends throughout the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Area.

Mare Island Historic Park Foundation is a 501(c)(3) Publicly Supported Organization established in 1995. Our Mission is to preserve and present to the public the history of the West's first Naval Base and Shipyard.

David Glasgow Farragut founded the Mare Island Shipyard in 1854, and the Navy closed the yard in 1996. During that period, over 500 ships, including nuclear submarines, were built at Mare Island Naval Shipyard.

The Foundation cares for four of the most historic buildings in Mare Island's National Historic Landmark District:

St. Peter's Chapel (built 1901) - renowned for the beautiful Tiffany designed stained glass windows

Quarters "A" (built 1900) - Largest (10,500 sq. ft.) of the 13 colonial revival mansions

Quarters "B" - A mansion of 7400 sq. ft also called the "Captain's Mansion"

Building 46 (built 1855) - Originally a smithery, then the pipe shop, now the Artifacts Museum

Another part of the Mission is to create ship museum displays. We are currently conducting a major effort to acquire the USS OLYMPIA; the MIHPF is caretaker for the sail of SSBN 658 Mariano G. Vallejo in its move to a permanent display on Mare Island; and USS LCS-102 is now at the Mare Island Waterfront. See Ships page for more information.

Poverty / Community Development 

Rebuilding Together fills a pressing need in our communities. The rising cost of living and falling social service budgets have left some of our most vulnerable neighbors without the most basic of necessities, a warm, safe, and dry home.

Rebuilding Together focuses on the issues of homeownership, the elderly, the disabled, families with children, healthcare, and the rising federal deficit. By identifying the challenges associated with these issues we are well placed to face a problem with full understanding and to create real, sustainable solutions for the low-income homeowners we serve.

The mission of the National Liberty Ship Memorial is to restore, promote and operate the Liberty Ship, SS Jeremiah O'Brien, as a living museum. The goal of this mission is to preserve, for present and future generations, the story of the patriotic and brave men and women who built, sailed and defended the 2,751 American-built World War II ships known as Liberties.

Youth Development

The Leaven works in partnership with members of the local community; including businesses, police and fire departments, local government, school administrators and teachers, church groups and concerned neighbors to bring after-school mentoring and tutoring programs as a revitalization tool to struggling neighborhoods where drop-out rates are out of control and gangs threaten the peace of the community. We believe in living out our Christian faith through after-school programs, community activities, family support and nurturing to our neighbors.

Maritime

The Presidential Yacht Potomac is run by volunteers. Over 120 men and women staff this Historic Landmark and all of the organization’s programs and activities. The opportunities for volunteers span a wide range from ship’s maintenance, speaker’s bureau, IT specialist, newsletter editing, cruise staffing, dockside tours, office and administrative positions and educational programs. No special background is required, simply a desire to be part of our Potomac “staff” and to have fun…because you will!

The Potomac Association believes that every volunteer is an asset and we take time to ensure that you are well trained and supported. As a new volunteer you will experience a three hour introductory training course, and each year there is a refresher on specific opportunities. We provide learning materials for you and we have a library devoted to FDR, Eleanor, and the era. The best way to learn however is from the other fabulous volunteer docents who are the heart of the Potomac.

Located in the heart of scenic Napa Valley, the Veterans Home of California-Yountville (VHC-Yountville) is a community of and for veterans. Founded in 1884, VHC-Yountville is the largest veterans’ home in the United States, offering residential accommodations with a wealth of recreational, social, and therapeutic activities for independent living. Some 1,000 aged or disabled veterans (both men and women) or World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Desert Storm, and Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom now live at the home.
