Opportunity Summary 

SCCLTRG is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping communities rebuild and recover after disasters. We work alongside individuals, families, and local organizations to provide long-term support and resources following natural disasters like fires, floods, and storms.
As an SCCLTRG intern, you will:
- Participate in data collection and analysis to help inform our work.
- Gain valuable experience in disaster case management, resource coordination, and community outreach.
- Develop your professional skills in communication, collaboration, and problem-solving.
- Support the execution of our volunteer rebuild program.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

By the end of this opportunity, students will have learned:

Practical skills in disaster recovery, including case management, resource coordination, and community outreach.
How to assess the needs of individuals and families affected by disasters and connect them with critical resources.
The long-term recovery process and how to support communities through it.
Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills in a real-world, non-profit setting.
How to write grants, analyze data, and create content for a non-profit organization (if applicable to their internship area).
Leadership skills through teamwork and potentially taking initiative on projects.
The challenges and opportunities faced by communities during and after disasters.
How to make a real and lasting difference in the lives of others and contribute to the well-being of their local community.

Opportunity Training 

The following are not descriptive of specific courses at specified lengths and/or durations, but rather a collection of in-house learning opportunities that will be provided in conjunction with and as necessary for specific tasks:

Disaster Recovery Fundamentals:
- Introduction to disaster types, impacts, and long-term recovery processes.
- FEMA and other relevant disaster relief programs and resources.
- Case management principles and practices for disaster recovery.
- Ethical considerations in working with vulnerable populations.

Skill Development:
- Effective communication for building rapport with clients and community members.
- Collaboration strategies for working within teams and with external partners.
- Problem-solving techniques for navigating complex recovery situations.
- Resource identification and referral training specific to Santa Cruz County needs.

Area-Specific Training:
- Case Management: Client intake procedures, needs assessment tools, financial assistance programs, housing recovery resources.
- Resource Coordination: Building partnerships with community organizations, managing resource databases, referral processes.
- Community Outreach: Communication strategies for outreach campaigns, disaster preparedness education, cultural competency training.
- Non-profit Administration: Grant writing fundamentals, data collection and analysis for grant reporting, social media and website content creation.

Additionally:
- Mentorship opportunities with experienced SCCLTRG staff.
- Participation in relevant team meetings and case discussions for on-the-job learning.
- Access to online resources and training materials for continued learning.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

Virtual: We prioritize online safety. Use strong passwords, be cautious with email attachments and links, and report suspicious activity.

In-Person: Safety is paramount. Pre-activity training covers disaster site etiquette, safe interaction, and protocols (clothing, lifting techniques, hazard recognition). We provide PPE and supervision. Remember, staying aware and voicing concerns are key to your safety throughout the internship.
