Organization Description

The specific purpose of the Long Term Recovery Group of Santa Cruz County is to facilitate the coordination, communication, cooperation and collaboration necessary for disaster preparedness, response, recovery, and resiliency for both individuals and communities within the greater Santa Cruz County area.

We are a brand new organization borne out of a necessity arising after Santa Cruz County being impacted by three federally declared disasters since 2020 when 911 single family dwellings burned down in the CZU Complex Lightning Fire. We are currently launching a volunteer rebuild program that will help bring our most vulnerable families home, and also focusing efforts towards disaster preparedness, prevention, and mitigation projects to create long-term resiliency in our disaster vulnerable communities and populations.

Program Information

General Description of what students will be doing at this Site:
We are specifically looking to partner with students that are interested in the administrative aspects of nonprofit operations. The majority of internship tasks are online, with occasional in the field engagement opportunities. There will be grant writing, data analysis and reporting, form design. Design of outreach and social media content, and web design. No experience is needed in any of these areas, training will be provided.

Key Responsibilities:
Grant research and writing.
Graphic design using Canva.
Drafting of web and social media content.
Community outreach efforts.
Data collection and analysis.

Desired Intern Characteristics:
Excellent verbal and written communication.
Interest in graphic design.
Collaboration and leadership qualities.
Self motivated and success oriented.

Special Considerations:
Must be able to adhere to deadlines, even when working remotely,
Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency is preferred, but not required. Monolingual English students are equally encouraged to apply.

Interprofessional opportunities available for the student:
Our Volunteer Rebuild Program is building 5-6 homes per year in collaboration with Mennonite Disaster Services for families impacted by the CZU Fire. There is an ongoing opportunity to providing project support at the build sites for any student that chooses to intern with our organization.

Health & Safety

Students may visit construction sites as part of our volunteer rebuild site. Participating in the construction is not required, but may naturally come about so we are checking this option to allow for that eventuality.

This is primarily a virtual opportunity with some on-site in-the-field requirements. Operating hours are 9am-5pm, but internship hours need not follow this schedule.

Any on-site scheduling is subject to change and may be able to take students' preferences into consideration.

The majority of the work will be performed remotely with, at a minimum, weekly check-ins to ensure projects are performed on a satisfactory timeline.

Interns will be included in any relevant staff and stakeholder meetings as far as their schedule allows.

The majority of the work can be done independent of a 9-5 schedule, weekends okay.
