Summary of Positions:
1) The Monterey County Health Department’s STRYVE Program is seeking a student intern or recent graduate to participate in a paid internship focusing on strategies to prevent youth violence. The intern’s primary responsibility will be to assist the Program Coordinator with student groups implementing “Crime Prevention through Environmental Design” (CPTED). CPTED is a strategy that changes the built and social environments in ways that make violence and crime less likely to occur. In addition, the intern will assist with a variety of public health projects and tasks.
The STRYVE Program is located at the Monterey County Government Center, 1441 Schilling Place, in Salinas. Program work will occur at this office, as well as at Salinas high schools and continuation schools.
DUTIES
The intern position will assist the STRYVE Program Coordinator in working with youth-led groups of high school students on the CPTED strategy. Interns will:
- Facilitate groups of youth, enabling meaningful participation and youth leadership
- Empower youth to change their community
- Create a positive setting for youth development
- Train students to conduct surveys and assessments in order to gather unbiased information
- Guide group process for decision-making, setting priorities and maintaining group agreements
- Prepare students to participate in and present at school board and city council meetings
- Prepare materials and content for group meetings at the schools
- Complete required trainings
- Assist with other program-related assignments.
QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants should be able to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities to:
- Make oral presentations
- Enter data into Excel spreadsheets and use Word to compose written materials
- Ability to travel to and from multiple locations using their own vehicle and possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.

The intern will have opportunities to participate in a variety of learning activities and meetings at the Health Department, to gain a greater understanding of public health.

The primary responsibility for interns will be to assist the Program Coordinator with student groups implementing “That’s not Cool” and “Crime Prevention through Environmental Design” (CPTED). “That’s Not Cool” is a public education and social marketing campaign to support healthy relationships, prevent teen dating violence and reduce digital dating abuse. CPTED is a strategy that changes the built and social environments in ways that make violence and crime less likely to occur. In addition, interns will be asked to assist with a variety of public health projects and tasks.
Job Description
Interns will assist the STRYVE and Postpone Coordinators in working with youth-led groups of high school students on the “That’s Not Cool” and CPTED strategies.

Minimum Qualifications Candidates must have a high school degree, some college and either be students enrolled in school during this internship or recent graduates interested in early career experience.
Applicants should be able to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities to: • Make oral presentations • Enter data into Excel spreadsheets and use Word to compose written materials • Be familiar with the use of social media • Travel around Salinas using their own vehicle and possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record. The ability to speak and understand Spanish is desirable.
Location and Hours The STRYVE Program is located at the Monterey County Government Center, 1441 Schilling Place, in Salinas. Program work will occur at this office, as well as at Salinas high schools and continuation schools.
The internship is part-time, from 15 to 20 hours per week, Monday through Friday, primarily during the business day, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., plus some occasional evening meetings and weekend events. Hours are somewhat flexible in an effort to accommodate school schedules.
This is a temporary position and payment will be $18.39 per hour. There are no County benefits associated with these positions.
