Oral Health- MCHD

Organization Description

The Monterey County Health Department exists to enhance, protect, and improve the health Monterey County residents and environments. MCHD provides a wide variety of health-related services in the areas of behavioral health, clinic services, emergency management services, environmental health, public guardianship, and public health.

Program Information

Oral Health Purpose:

  • Overarching goal is to address oral health needs within Monterey County through prevention, education, and capacity building.
  • Partner with dental providers to increase access to care by conducting school dental screenings and creating community linkages

Student intern(s) will assist the Monterey County Oral Health Program in the following:

  • Implement curriculum to educate parents on children’s oral health promotion which include but not limited to:
    • Plaque control and effects of oral health disease
    • Nutrition and sugar sweetened beverages
    • Promote regular dental care and preparation for visiting the dentist
  • Implement curriculum to educate elementary school students on:
    • Good oral hygiene and causes and effects of tooth decay
    • Nutrition as it relates to oral health
  • Support dental providers in school screening events by:
  • Assisting with student registration
  • Providing health education and materials to students
  • Setting-up and breaking down equipment
  • Providing general support to patient workflow
  • Support online outreach efforts to promote oral health
    • Updating program webpage with content, links, and resources
    • Engaging in social media platforms to run oral health campaigns
  • Support with program evaluation efforts
    • Collecting and analyzing data

Desired qualifications

  • Strong written or oral communication skills
  • Comfortable at public speaking
  • Fluent in English and Spanish (highly preferred)
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Adaptable and able to work independently
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Culturally competent
  • Available 1-2 days during the weekday
  • Flexibility to be available in occasional evenings and mornings during the weekdays
