Ventana Wilderness Alliance (VWA)

Organization Description

The mission of the Ventana Wilderness Alliance is to protect, preserve, and restore the wilderness qualities and biodiversity of the public lands within California's northern Santa Lucia Mountains and Big Sur coast.

Health & Safety

Students may be working unsupervised with minor or other vulnerable populations. Parking and work areas may not be secure or adequately illuminated. Students may be required to work at night (after 6pm). Or, students may be supervised less than 50% of the time or the supervisor will be overseeing more than 8 people.

Youth in Wilderness (YiW) outings serve youth from ages 12-24 with the majority of participants being minors below the age of 18. CSU students will be under the supervision of YiW Field Instructors most of the time, but there may be instances where students may be unsupervised such as if a student stays behind on the trail with a group of participants.

Youth in Wilderness outings take place in wilderness areas which are not adequately illuminated. There is always a possibility of risk when leaving a vehicle parked at a wilderness trailhead over a span of days, but in general these areas are very safe with minimal reported incidents.

Youth in Wilderness outings are 3 day, 2 night long outings where days sometimes do not end until 11pm.
