Organization Description

The mission of the Monterey County District Attorney's Office is to promote justice, ensure that the rights of victims are upheld by treating them with dignity, respect and compassion, and aggressively and fairly prosecuting those who violate the law. 

Program Information

The mission of the victim/witness assistance program is to provide services to victims/witnesses of all types of crime; reduce the trauma and insensitive treatment that victims/witnesses may experience in the wake of a crime.

Victims of Crime program provides support and referrals to community services for victims of crime. 

CHHS students will be assigned to a case advocate specializing in a particular area of crime including domestic violence, youth violence, sexual assaults, etc.
Student will shadow victim assistance advocate in the beginning and when appropriate make contact with victims of crime via telephone or in person. Student will document all contact with clients on a victim contact record.

Provide intake services to victims of crime to assess needs for community services. Phone calls, in-person intakes, accompany/support to court hearings, etc. Each student will be assigned to a Victim Advocate to assist in providing direct services. Three semester commitment required.

Desired Intern Characteristics: Preferred characteristics: Clear communicator, strong organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to be compassionate, nonjudgmental, and ready to meet those who have been traumatized by others and be able to provide a safe environment, understanding and empathy.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE BACKGROUND CHECK CAN TAKE SEVERAL WEEKS TO COMPLETE, STUDENTS ARE NOT ABLE TO START THE PLACEMENT UNTIL THE BACKGROUND CHECK IS COMPLETED.

STUDENTS MUST BRING RESUME AND LIST OF REFERENCES TO THE INTERVIEW.
