Organization Description

MISSION:

At Salinas Valley Health Foundation, we believe that everyone deserves access to high quality, state-of-the-art healthcare, delivered locally. The Foundation supports Salinas Valley Health by funding healthcare services, programs, and facilities for our diverse community.

Program Information

Our Children's Miracle Network (CMN) Program supports newborn and pediatric medical equipment and services at Salinas Valley Health Medical Center and across the tri-county area. Our priority population is youth ages 0-19 in the tri-county area (Monterey, San Benito, and Santa Cruz Counties).

One unique way to help fund these critical pediatric resources is through a peer-to-peer gaming fundraising program called Extra Life. The program allows anyone to improve kids' health and shape the future by playing games and fundraising year-round. Click here to learn more about the Extra Life program.

All the funds collected stay local to support pediatric needs. We fund newborn and pediatric equipment and services at Salinas Valley Health, including pediatric crash carts, incubators, and comfort-care items such as coloring books, teddy bears, and pajamas for patients. Additionally, we fund medical needs grants for individual children living within our tri-county area for items such as mobility devices and wheelchair ramps/lifts, as well as services such as art, equestrian, and aquatic therapy that are otherwise not covered by insurance.

Under the supervision of the CMN Program Coordinator, the CHHS intern will recruit and retain Extra Life gamers and increase overall annual donation totals. The intern will work to meet specific targets for participants, total funds raised, and the percentage of participants who fundraise.

Below are some of the responsibilities for the intern role:

  1. Research and reactivate lapsed Extra Life participants, encouraging them to return to the program.
  2. Recruit new Extra Life participants by:
    • Research gaming stores and lounges, libraries, comic book stores, toy shows, and other spaces where gamers gather. Leverage findings and connections to engage gamers and establishment owners to join and promote the Extra Life program.
    • Learning about local e-sports groups in high schools and colleges and sharing information about the Extra Life program. Existing groups at local universities will require stewardship.
    • Contacting popular streamers and influencers to share and promote Extra Life within their online communities.
    • Exploring corporate Extra Life opportunities and promoting company teams. For example, create a team of Salinas Valley Health employees and recruit members.
  3. Collaborate with the CMN Program Coordinator to execute a local fundraising gaming event at a community center, bowling alley, bingo club, escape room, laser tag venue, restaurant, etc.
    • Attempt to secure a matching gift partner for one of the Extra Life events.
  4. Support Game Day participants by sending them a package of their favorite snacks and Extra Life swag for their 24-hour livestream gaming event, and pop into their livestream to share appreciation messages.
  5. Participate in scheduled quarterly check-in meetings with Extra Lifers.
  6. Prepare a monthly newsletter (Communicator) to keep lapsed and active Extra Life participants informed about Extra Life happenings and impact data.

The intern will periodically present their activities and progress toward goals at staff meetings. The presentation will include information and metrics on the goals' success.

The ideal candidate is outgoing, resourceful, organized, goal-oriented, a self-starter, and a critical thinker with an interest in program management, fundraising, philanthropy, pediatric health, marketing, data analysis, event planning, public speaking, and networking. It is a strong plus if the intern is a gamer.

Additional responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  1. Assisting the program coordinator with the stewardship of CMN corporate partners, including GameStop, Ace Hardware, and others. This may include driving their vehicle to various corporate partner locations in the tri-county area. The intern may submit a mileage reimbursement report.
  2. Supporting fundraising campaigns, such as charity drawing programs, sporting equipment and toy drives, and tabling at events.
  3. Supporting the annual CMN All-Partner recognition event.
  4. Attending Foundation events and meetings.
  5. Collecting and counting money from the medical center’s donation boxes.

The Children’s Miracle Network Program aims to raise awareness of the Extra Life program and rally a community of fundraising gamers to Make a Big Change for All Kids. We hope an interested intern will recognize the program’s value and the many opportunities it offers children in the community, and join our efforts to improve kids’ health and the future.
