The Mission of Monterey County Free Libraries is to bring ideas, inspiration, information and enjoyment to our community.

Program Information

Purpose:

In conjunction with the library’s mission in bringing ideas, inspiration and enjoyment to the community, Adult Literacy volunteers provide 1-1 learner centered tutoring to support adult literacy students.

We currently support tutoring in these libraries:

Seaside

Marina

Castroville

with a single pair meeting at Greenfield, Soledad and Monterey Public.

additional locations to be determined based on availability

Literacy tutors and program staff support literacy students in the areas of reading, writing, test preparation (CBEST, Driver’s License, Citizenship, others) and speaking. Program staff is committed to providing continued education and community building opportunities for tutors. The primary function of a CHHS intern will be to research, develop, organize and deliver tutor resources beyond the circulating collection in the library.

 

Examples of tasks CHHS intern could provide:

· organization of suggested websites for tutors

· updating list of books in the literacy professional collection

· index of related tutoring worksheets

· support for tutor training and in-services

· drop-in student/tutor hours (tentative)

· Answering the phone and directing inquires as appropriate

· ESL classroom support

· community outreach

· co-delivery of Family literacy programming

· research on lesson planning, language acquisition and adult learning

· Intern may shadow staff providing routine public library service.

 

Related Skills:

Bilingual candidates are especially appreciated! All Volunteers must speak, read, and understand basic English and possess a high level of organization and attention to detail

Must be 18 years or older.

Intern must keep contact information up to date with the library, and respond to requests for assistance, even if unable to serve at that time. Weekly schedule to be determined based on Student Schedule/Availability and program needs.

Recruitment and Training:

Volunteers will view a number of videos provided by the California State library on adult literacy tutoring and attend local program orientation at the library administrative offices in Marina as well as other branches/locations as needed.

Volunteers will keep a timesheet with the Program and complete any related documentation required for the library and CHHS programs.

ADA requirements: 20-50 lbs lifting;

flu shots recommended
