Program Information General Description of what students will be doing at this Site: Harbor High School educates students who come from diverse cultural backgrounds with a student body population of over 1,000 students. In addition, 63.51% of Harbor students come from a Hispanic background, making Harbor the High School in North County that serves the largest number of Latinx students in our community. Harbor High School is committed to providing students with the tools to become college and career ready. Harbor also provides educational opportunities to “newcomers”--students who recently arrived in the United States, and who often come from challenging educational backgrounds. As newcomer students enter their new educational environment, they may experience different academic, linguistic, and social-emotional challenges. Harbor High is committed to helping newcomer students navigate through these challenges to help them to reach their goals.
Key Responsibilities: Under the guidance of the School-Community Coordinator, the intern will help newcomer students and their parents successfully navigate their new educational environment by maintaining open and frequent communication with parents/tutors. The intern will support the implementation of programs that encourage newcomer students to participate in extracurricular school activities. The intern will support outreach efforts to parents of EL students.
Desired Intern Characteristics: Strong human relations and interpersonal skills Strong cultural competency (most frequently our newcomers are from Latin America) Ability to communicate fluently in Spanish. Ability to navigate effectively in a fast-paced school environment

Please provide details about trainings offered or required: Training required: Minimum of two years studying towards earning a BS in Social Work, Community Health and Public Administration, or a Teaching degree.
