Program Information

General Description of what students will be doing at this Site: Library social work involves serving patron’s needs not only as a learning resource but also through crisis intervention and meeting unmet social service needs where patrons are and may expand to the building of community networks as well.

Key Responsibilities: Interns will use local resources to assist community members needing housing, food, unemployment, veteran benefits or other applicable social services. Interns will hold office hours and provide ‘roving ‘hours to assist with identification and completion of online forms for social services. Additional help with adult programs and regular library duties such as checking in/out books, shelving, and homework center help may be required. In addition, interns will learn basic operations of the library and related county/community organizations. Intern may also participate in library sponsored programs or activities related to social services as applicable. Some of these events and meetings may be held offsite.

Desired Intern Characteristics: Desired intern characteristics enjoys helping people, is flexible and dependable, thrives in a team environment while also working independently, maintains a positive attitude, and is community focused. Be available to work varied hours, shifts, evenings, and weekends.

Special Considerations: Interns will use a computer and computer software such as Word, Excel, and databases. Interns will need to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and follow instructions. Interns may need to drive a motor vehicle on the job in order to attend community meetings, or outreach events. Marina library is located near public transportation.

Interprofessional opportunities available for the student: Working at Marina Library will require collaboration with Branch managers, program volunteers and staff as well as individuals, youths and families visiting the library. In addition, the intern will be working in a library environment with professional staff and will be required to abide by the same standard of punctuality, customer service, and professionalism. Potential contact with other social service agencies including MPUSD, the CA State Library, First Five of Monterey County, the Food Bank, and other agencies in the area who focus on providing housing and medical resources for our houseless community members.

Intern will work closely with site mentor and learn about library operations through initial training sessions. Interns will also receive trainings from mentor about that will als. Interns will also undergo professional pre-recorded trainings about homelessness in public libraries by experts in this field.

Health & Safety

ADA requirements Stand, walk, and sit up to 2 hours during shifts. Stretch, stoop, or bend. Lift and carry objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
