CSUMB EOSP

Program Information

The Guardian Scholars Program serves Former Foster youth/ Homeless students who are currently attending CSUMB. It is one of the College Support Programs operating under the Office of Early Outreach & Support Programs in Building 47.
An MSW Intern would be supervised by the PGCC staff to support with small group discussions/ counseling, and supplemental therapeutic services, help in researching program grants and student scholarships, Assist with Planning Guardian Scholar events and Retreats to emphasize on Wellness and Mental Health Issues. There may also be an opportunity to contribute to the Case management and Administrative processes as well.

There will be three separate possible internships: GEAR UP interns will service Seaside Middle and Seaside High School. The interns will work with GEAR UP staff to see students who may be having some behavioral problems or academic problems. They will also help the Parent Engagement Specialist to reach more parents.

The second opportunity is with CAMP whereby the intern will be utilized as a resource for CAMP students who may be having difficulties adjusting from a migrant household to a college lifestyle. This would entail individual sessions as well as the intern being able to provide campus and community resources to the students.

The third intern would be for our Guardian Scholars Program, which serves foster youth and homeless students. This intern would service our foster youth with individual sessions on how to adjust as a foster youth, both in and out of college. They will provide potential campus and community resources to aid the Guardian Scholar in adjusting to college life, and to ensure they are making satisfactory progress in their academic subjects.

Health & Safety

There are no health risks and the safety risk would be extremely low. The only foreseeable risk is if a student (high school or college) would be angry and may not be appropriate in his/her behavior in showing that anger (i.e, yelling at the intern)

Understanding the culture of the student and parent as well as the culture of the schools would be important to know.
