Organization Description

Discovery Counseling center combines a private practice setting for confidential counseling ( center-based), plus community-based sites servicing children, families, and seniors and primarily serving the South County of Santa Clara. DDC provides services to a diverse population by age, ethnicity, language, religious background, and culture. Its mission is to serve the community by strengthening development assets.

Program Information

Discovery's practicum sites include a behavioral health clinic and school-based counseling within the Morgan Hill & Gilroy Unified School Districts, Gavilan College, community programs and workshops to parents and youth to develop relational skills. Discovery also runs 2 after-school programs for low income communities. The afterschool programs focus on tutoring and homework help for children and workshops for parents. There is also an aging track through the local nursing care facility, as well as a community organization track within our local government programs and school boards

(Discovery Counseling Center (DCC) provides center-based and school-based counseling services throughout the South County of Santa Clara County to a diverse population of child, adolescent, adult, and older adult clients.

Within a very attractive, private practice-like outpatient setting, or welcoming school and community sites, MSW interns:

1. Gain experience working within the scope of practice as a social worker.
2. Develop competence in the clinical assessment, diagnosis (DSM 5), and treatment of behavioral health disorders, emotional health, and relational issues.
3. Are trained in advanced multi-systemic practice and person-centered treatment using a variety of psychotherapeutic theories and evidence-based interventions that support their ability to conceptualize clinical cases and treat clinical issues.
4. Are supported through advanced clinical supervision in the use of reflective practice that fosters effective therapeutic relationships and clinical effectiveness, including but not limited to transcultural engagement, compassion, empathy, sensitivity, integrity, insight, flexibility, personal presence, self-awareness, and person growth.
5. Are guided in the promotion of advocacy, social justice, and client's rights in accordance with the NASW code of ethics, HIPAA regulations, and mental health law.

Health & Safety

Students will be expected to work with populations who have higher than average health and mental health morbidity due to low SES, immigration status, and exposure to drugs and alcohol.

General common sense and watchfulness is more crime/drug impacted sectors of the community.
