Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project (MBSTP)

Organization Description

To recover the native salmon and steelhead populations of the Monterey Bay region.

Health & Safety

Access dirt road to hatchery requires 4 wheel drive, 8+ inches of clearance, and extreme caution due to a steep slope on one side; however, alternative access routes are possible with a little hiking. Our hatchery is also in the CZU lighting complex fire burn scar, so tree falls are a possible hazard, especially on windy and rainy days. Flooding and debris flows also possible during high water flow events, but on those days we will rely on remote monitoring and not come into the hatchery.

The hatchery is fairly remote and there is no cell service aside from our wifi network, so contacting emergency services can be challenging depending on your location at the hatchery.
