SUNY-ESF, Adirondack Ecological Center
The State University of New York's (SUNY) mission and purpose is providing formal education for the next generation. SUNY's College of Environmental Science of Forestry (ESF) is SUNY's specialized four-year college focused on the environment, and preparing the next generation of environmental professionals. The Adirondack Ecological Center (AEC) is the academic unit at ESF's Newcomb Campus, a 15,000 acre research, teaching, and demonstration campus in the Adirondack Mountains. The AEC leads the education and outreach program at the Newcomb Campus, which includes the Artist in Residence program.
The Artist in Residence program is designed to create a high degree of freedom for the artist to work in the studio/classroom space and/or along the trails ("plein air") in order to engage with guests in both the studio and natural settings. This settings will not be under the direct supervision of the site host.
The Newcomb campus is in an extremely remote part of New York State, in a community of 408 year-round residents. The Newcomb Campus is situated in a wilderness of forests, lakes and wildlife. Any student accepting a placement with the AEC must be interested, willing, and comfortable in a remote setting, and must be responsible for their own safety. This includes any activities they may undertake on their own time, including hiking or swimming. In addition, travel to and from the Newcomb Campus as well as travel between provided housing and their daily work site is the sole responsibility of the student. Students live at the Newcomb Campus in shared housing, and shared rooming. They will be assigned housing aligned with their preferences but no students have private housing.
