Santa Monica Mountains Fire Safe Council

Organization Description

The Santa Monica Mountains Fire Safe Council (SMMFSC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting wildfire safety and community resilience throughout the Santa Monica Mountains. Through education, technical support, subject matter expertise, community-driven action plans, and collaborative programs, SMMFSC helps residents and communities reduce wildfire risk, strengthen preparedness, and protect homes and natural resources. Programs include Firewise USA® support, Home Ignition Zone evaluations, community workdays, wildfire education, Community Wildfire Protection Plan assistance, and other resilience initiatives.

Health & Safety

Students may occasionally participate in outdoor field activities, community events, site visits, or wildfire preparedness and resilience projects. Potential conditions may include uneven terrain, vegetation, heat, sun exposure, weather conditions, insects, and proximity to active community work activities. Students will be informed of applicable safety procedures and expectations before participating and will not be assigned duties requiring specialized training or equipment without appropriate instruction and supervision.

SMMFSC operates on a flexible schedule based on program, community, and project needs. Student schedules can be coordinated with SMMFSC staff and may include remote work, administrative/project work, community meetings, educational events, field activities, and community workdays. Some programs and events may occur during evenings or weekends.
