Program Information

Students will spend the first half of the year shadowing assessments, interventions, group work, and learning about the complexities of a hospital system and assisting in coordinating care for patients. There will be opportunities to attend educational events on campus through Schwartz Rounds and OB/GYN and Psychiatry Grand Rounds. Students will also learn about the California Perinatal Services Program (CPSP) and obtaining the training necessary to become a "CPSP provider" at which point the patient will be able to complete psychosocial assessments semi to completely independently in the second half of the year. The student will also be expected to co-facilitate the post-delivery group and learn to make referral to outside community providers. The student will be given the opportunity to learn the legislative/macro end of social work practice, hospital/mezzo level, and patient care/micro levels of social work practice.

Health & Safety

Students will be working in an obstetric clinic setting where exposure to infectious diseased is lower than in the general hospital setting but not absent. Also students may shadow and/or tour in the Labor and Delivery and NICU departments which increases risk of incidental exposure. Students are required to pass a physical examination including TB testing as well as a background check. Flu vaccination and/or wearing a mask if they opt-out are required. Students will be outfitted with a personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety protocols for infectious diseases including additional PPE when needed.
