Organization Description

The Sacramento Children’s Museum (SCM) was incorporated as a non-profit corporation in 2005.
It is the vision of local educators who saw the need for inspiring learning through interactivity. SCM seeks to build an environment in which learning is exciting and enriching for children and their families and facilitated through exploration and hands-on activities. The desire in Sacramento to build a children's museum was so great, that the organization quickly grew to include local business people, children's advocates, educators, physicians, attorneys, librarians, and others. This group embarked on a journey to determine how to best meet the needs of the children in our community ages birth to eight years old, and the 7,000-square-foot Sacramento Children's Museum is the result. Built by Roebbelen Contracting, Inc., the Museum opened to the public on August 25, 2011. There are currently nine members on the SCM's board of directors, as well as six advisory council members.

SCM strongly believes that play is an essential part of a child’s “work.” Imaginative, hands-on environments provide children with a gateway for opening up their minds to developing new abilities, building confidence, and making connections between their dreams and real world experiences. STEM-based education and exhibits are an integral part of Sacramento Children’s Museum, and we introduce these ideas throughout the Museum. Stacking, dropping, sorting, matching and balancing are all concepts that children explore while playing in “CityWays.” “Solar Car Racers” introduces the notion of solar power and the sun as an energy source in a fun, simple way.  Learning about wind flow and air currents becomes a game in “AirWays.” Our mission is to spark a passion for life-long learning, and through these exhibits, we are introducing concepts of science, technology, engineering, and math that take root in our young visitors and will flourish over time.

Program Information

Sacramento Children's Museum focuses on children from birth to age 8. Our mission is to spark a passion for life-long learning. We will accomplish our mission by providing a place where children are encouraged to think for themselves, expand their problem-solving abilities through creative exploration, and exercise both their bodies and their minds.
