Organization Description We oversee the state's diverse public school system, which is responsible for the education of more than six million children and young adults in more than 10,000 schools with 295,000 teachers. We are in charge of enforcing education law and regulations and continuing to reform and improve public school programs.
Program Information The California Department of Education, Nutrition Services Division (NSD), helps schools, child care programs, and other community programs provide healthy meals and snacks to children. Children who qualify may also be able to get free meals or meals at a very low cost. The Education and Nutrition Policy Unit (ENPU) within the NSD provides nutrition and food service education and training to child nutrition programs with the goal of improving the nutritional health of children and families. - An intern would have the opportunity to work alongside a Nutrition Education Consultant or Child Nutrition Consultant and assist with planning, developing, and organizing statewide education training workshops, conferences, Webinars, and materials for school and child care personnel for various projects including: · The Healthier US School Challenge Initiative in California · The Smarter Lunchroom Initiative in California · The Team Up for School Nutrition Success Initiative in California · Farm2School Initiative in California · The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program · The Healthy and Active Preschoolers Web site -The intern will have the opportunity to go on a site visit to shadow a food service director at a local school district. -The intern will attend pertinent meetings that will enhance their knowledge of community nutrition.
