Organization Description

The OUSD Counseling Intern Program is meaningful opportunity for Master Level Social Workers and to get invaluable experience serving students and families in Oakland’s public schools while completing degree requirements. All counseling interns can also earn their Pupil Personnel Services Credential! Gain Experience: -Providing Individual and Group Counseling -Conducting Restorative Conflict Mediations -Providing Clinical Case Management -Attending Individualized Education Plan Meetings -Participating as a member of a Multidisciplinary Team of Service Providers -Teaching Social Emotional Skills in the Classroom We provide high quality training and support including Play Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, DBT, Restorative Justice Practices and a 3 part series on Trauma. Individual on-site supervision with an LCSW and group supe weekly. MSW interns are placed primarily in elementary schools across Oakland with a team of service providers and interns.

Program Information

MSW interns primarily provide individual and group counseling. Interns complete clinical assessments and goal setting with families and students referred through the COST process at their elementary site. Interns also provide case-management, facilitate mediations if needed, support in the classrooms with social-emotional learning and projects to boost a positive school climate! Secondary placements provided for interns earning their PPS at the middle or high school level.

Health & Safety

Interns may engage with a student or caregiver who is escalated and demonstrating unsafe behavior. They are coached on how to de-escalate and given boundaries around their role and physical safety recommendations. Interns may do a risk assessment but only in consultation with clinical supervisor and other supports.
