Paloma Elementary: Service Learning in the TK ClassroomAt — San Marcos Unified School District
This service-learning opportunity allows college students to complete required service-learning hours while making a meaningful impact in a Transitional Kindergarten (TK) classroom. Participants support early learners during a critical stage of social, emotional, and academic development by assisting teachers with small-group activities, play-based learning, literacy foundations, and classroom routines. College students help create a nurturing, engaging environment that promotes curiosity, communication, and positive behavior, while gaining firsthand experience working with young children in an educational setting. This experience is especially valuable for students interested in education, child development, psychology, speech and language, or social services, but is open to all majors seeking hands-on community engagement. Through regular classroom support, volunteers build leadership, empathy, and communication skills while contributing to a joyful, inclusive learning space. This partnership benefits both TK students and college volunteers by fostering growth, connection, and a shared commitment to supporting early childhood education
By the end of this service-learning opportunity, college students will have earned their required hours while gaining hands-on experience in a Transitional Kindergarten (TK) classroom. Volunteers will learn how early-childhood classrooms are structured and how routines, play-based learning, and developmental milestones support young learners’ growth. With guidance from the TK teacher, students will assist with small-group activities, early literacy and language development, learning centers, art projects, and positive behavior supports. They will strengthen skills in communication, patience, and age-appropriate interaction while practicing professional expectations such as confidentiality, reliability, and teamwork. Volunteers will also learn strategies for supporting diverse learners, including English Learners and students with varying social-emotional needs. Overall, participants will leave with a deeper understanding of child development and education careers, plus documented service hours that contribute to their college requirements. Participants will receive feedback from staff, reflect on service, and build experience to reference on resumes and applications.
During the volunteer approval process college students will provide criteria for volunteer approval.
Students but complete Level B Volunteer Clearance with school district.
