Become a "Study Buddy" at La Mirada Academy and make a direct impact on the academic journey of K-8 students. This program pairs CSUSM students with younger learners to provide vital academic support and mentorship. Your role is twofold: helping students master their schoolwork while serving as a consistent, motivating role model who encourages higher education goals.
By participating in this partnership, CSUSM students will develop: Mentorship & Role Modeling: Learn how to build professional, supportive relationships with youth to foster academic resilience. Instructional Adaptation: Gain experience in "scaffolding"—breaking down complex K-8 academic concepts into age-appropriate, engaging lessons. Communication Mastery: Refine the ability to explain ideas clearly to diverse age groups and improve interpersonal skills. Classroom Management Basics: Understand the dynamics of afterschool learning environments and how to keep students focused and motivated.
Orientation (45 Minutes): Led by the La Mirada site leadership to cover student safety, program goals, and effective tutoring techniques.Hands-On Onboarding: For your first two sessions, arrive 15 minutes early for a briefing and team lead will be present to provide support and guidance.
Students must complete our district volunteer application Level B located on our website. Also, bilingual is a plus.
