CSU Stanislaus - Speech Capture & Analysis Lab (COMM)

Organization Description

Program Information

Speech Capture & Analysis (SCA) Internships

Students can find internship opportunities here on campus within SCA. SCA is a designated High Impact Practice and provides students the opportunities to demonstrate their oral communication competency to gain skills in video recording and editing in active learning laboratories and spaces around campus. Interested students coordinate with Dr. Veronica Dawson, the course instructor, to develop a set of learning objectives for the experience. Interns then will work with SCA in a hands-on role supervised by SCA Program Manager, Dr. Christopher J. Claus.

 

Examples of SCA Internships:

  • Peer Communication Consultant:
    • Peer Communication Consultants work with students one-to-one to provide advice and feedback for students in Public Speaking courses to help them gain more confidence in their presentation style. Aside from helping those students within the A1 area of GE, Peer Communication Consultants will also be available to meet one-on-one with students from any department to go over their presentations for class or for research competitions. Group consultations might be necessary if requested. For students off-campus or remote consulting, Peer Communication Consultants may need to facilitate consultations via mediated channels (e.g. Zoom). Peer Communication Consultants will also have the opportunity to assist with organizing, outlining, and presenting for off-campus speakers; inlcuding audio andvideo recordings with student speakers directly.
      • Learning Activities include:demostrating oral communication competency, increased mediated communication competency, peer mentoring, and community engagement.

 

  • SCA Technician
    • In addition to the consulting responsibilities described above, student also have the opportunity to gain experience enhancing their audio and video recording editing, and post-production skills as a SCA Technician. Technicians are responsible for capturing presentations, eidting, and then providing copies to student participants and for Peer Communication Consultants for review. Technicians will work with Premier Pro (Industry-standard pro video and film editing software) and Audition (Industry-standard digatl audio editing software). 
      • Learning acitivities include: video recording and editing, audio recording and editing.
  1. Internships are not limited to these roles.
  2. Students are encouraged to propose new internships based on their personal learning objectives.
  3. Internships range from 1-4 units (48 hours per unit).
  4. Prerequisites: Junior Standing and completion of COMM 2000 or COMM 2110
