Organization Description

Our Mission The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is a membership organization that works to enhance the professional growth and development of our members, to create and maintain professional standards for social workers, and to advance sound social policies. Our Purpose To promote the quality and effectiveness of social work practice in the United States. To improve conditions of life in our democratic society using social work knowledge and skills. To help maintain and promote high standards for social work practice and preparation for practice.

Program Information

Students will work with NASW's Government Relations and Political Affairs Director and the Engagement Manager to learn how legislation is developed and passed in California. They will have the opportunity to attend coalition and strategy meetings to advance our priority legislation. In addition, they will attend committee hearings, negotiate amendments, research policy issues, mobilize social workers and organize events and activities. Students will learn to use the legislative tracking system, write brief bullet points on legislation, write support or opposition letters, provide administrative support to Lobby Days activities including soliciting silent auction items, managing item inventory and conducting the silent auction program at Lobby Days. Political work analyzing candidates for a state or local election and looking at statewide ballot measures will also be part of the internship.

The internship is currently remote and so these things are not required. This may change in the future and so may need the some of the above.
