Opportunity Summary 

This internship provides direct experience in case management, client support services, and human services coordination for vulnerable populations. Interns will assist clients in navigating housing, employment, education, and recovery resources. Interns may work with formerly incarcerated individuals, veterans, youth in transition, and individuals overcoming addiction. Roles include intake, follow-up, documentation, and advocacy.

Tasks:

Interns will:

Support intake processes by gathering client information and assessing needs

Maintain digital and hardcopy case notes and tracking logs

Help clients connect with employment, housing, or mental health services

Attend community resource events and shadow outreach staff

Follow up with clients to support long-term service engagement

Document progress and challenges under the guidance of the supervisor

Help maintain up-to-date referral lists and resource databases

Training:

Interns will receive:

Mandatory orientation covering confidentiality, boundaries, and HWF’s case management process

Weekly one-on-one mentoring sessions with the Case Manager or Supervisor

Shadowing experienced staff in client meetings and intakes

Workshops on trauma-informed care, referral tracking, and motivational interviewing

Review of sample case plans, progress notes, and reporting forms

Learning Outcome:

By the end of the academic internship, the student will be able to:

Conduct basic intake and client needs assessments using trauma-informed approaches

Provide referrals and track client progress in housing, employment, and reentry programs

Understand case management documentation and reporting processes

Demonstrate ethical and confidential communication with clients and professionals

Apply critical thinking to barriers facing vulnerable and justice-impacted populations
