Counseling Unclassified Paid InternAt — West Los Angeles College

Opportunity Summary 

The intern will perform a variety of tasks to support students, including but not limited to:

Under the supervision of faculty and staff, Unclassified Paid Interns (UPIs) will support student success initiatives by providing front-line assistance and case management services. Responsibilities include greeting students, assisting with appointment scheduling and walk-in services, and communicating with students via email, phone, online chat, and video conferencing.

Tasks:

1. Assisting students with utilizing our ConEx Ed software for booking appointments, Live Chats questions, and getting set up for their counseling appointments.
2. Student will familiarize herself with WLAC campus resources such as career center, the Welcome Center, Financial Aid, Admissions & Records, and The Learning Center for tutoring services to help student success.
3. Expand student awareness by creating and promoting flyers for support programs in the counseling office or contact student by telephone.

Training:

1. Check in with the intern bi-weekly.
2. Provide intern with training videos, websites, and shadowing other colleagues.
3. Intern will attend yearly retreat or department meetings.

Learning Outcome:

By the end of the internship, the student will be able to conduct the following:

1. Develop professional communication with student population
2. Develop experience in proactive outreach to connect students with campus resources. Support enrollment, retention, and completion efforts.
3. Learn to create and promote flyers, event calendars, and departmental materials.
