City of Eureka: Police Department

Program Information

The Eureka Police Department (EPD) welcomes Humboldt students in for-course-credit experiences, and might be able to accept a couple of students per semester, depending on staff availability. Please be aware of the following:

  1. Students interested need to first read over the information and complete the volunteer application available at: https://www.eurekaca.gov/380/Volunteer
  2. Students will need to pass a background check, conducted for free by EPD. As these can take a week or more, students should apply as early as possible in the semester (or previous semester), and be prepared for a wait on the background check results.
  3. Students will be expected to agree to and show up to scheduled service hours (please recognize that EPD staff make efforts to set aside time in their important business to host students and volunteers).  If you cannot make an appointed time, please responsibly communicate this to your site supervisor. If you have any problems reaching your EPD site supervisor, please communicate this with the faculty from your class. Please respect your role as a Cal Poly Humboldt student ambassador for yourself, your course and the campus.
  4. EPD offers the formal uniformed Eureka Volunteer Patrol (EVP) program to qualified students, however due to the intense nature of the training and service rendered, students will need to make a commitment to stay with the program as a volunteer beyond the normal semester time limits.
  5. Students may also help with other tasks at EPD, again, depending on staff availability. Example tasks include:
    • Web development & support/IT: create YouTube videos to be posted on the EPD Facebook page to educate citizens (video production skills desirable).
    • Special events
    • Community relations/customer service
    • Crime prevention/neighborhood watch
    • Special projects/research assistance
    • Live Scan/fingerprinting
    • Grant writing/fundraising
    • Administrative assistance tasks such as: Clerical (scanning, archiving, filing, purging docs), Data entry/information processing, etc.
