Program Information The Department of Social Work at the Department of State Hospitals-Napa State Hospital accepts second year graduate students for field placements. Students have the unique opportunity of gaining a breadth of experience in group and individual psychotherapy, case management, biopsychosocial assessment, therapeutic groups, including substance dependence/relapse prevention, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mental Health/Symptom Management, Social Skill Development, Anger Management, Anxiety Reduction, Mindfulness, etc. Students are assigned a caseload, individual therapy cases, co-facilitate groups, develop their own group treatment, and work within a multidisciplinary treatment team environment participating in treatment planning conferences and conducting essential social work duties under the supervision of a direct supervisor and an off-site clinical supervisor. Students are encouraged to take advantage of numerous trainings available through the continuing education department as well as the Department of Social Work. Additionally, numerous meso and macro level learning experiencing are available to students within the large institution of DSH-Napa, helping shape students' experience of the systems perspective. Most recently we have welcomed graduate student assistants from California State Universities, Sacramento, East Bay, and San Jose as well as Simmons University. We also enjoy having a student from UC Berkeley Graduate School of Social Welfare completing research for a doctoral degree.
