Center for Restorative Justice Works - Get On The Bus

Organization Description

The Center for Restorative Justice Works unites children, families, and communities separated by crime and the criminal justice system. CRJW calls the community to set aside pre-judgments about women and men in prison in order to work together to accompany families torn apart by the crime and the criminal justice system; create awareness about the negative impacts of incarceration on children and families, and advocate for programs and policies that restore relationships.

Program Information

Students will speak with families participating with GOTB, via video or phone call, facilitating paperwork necessary for children to visit their incarcerated parent. Students will also engage in fundraising, as donations of cash and items are needed to support the transportation of children to the prison visits throughout California. If permitted, (based on current health recommendations) students will also participate on the bus, checking in families, riding the bus, facilitating visits inside prisons, distributing games and activities to children and inmates, and riding the bus home with children and their caregivers after the prison visits. Students can also make instructional videos to assist the families in filling out paperwork and preparing for the trip.

Health & Safety

When contacting families or participating in GOTB events, students may be interacting with the elderly, the disabled and/or minors. If students participate in GOTB events, they will be required to attend a training which addresses how to approach minors during the day of events. Because majority of our participants caregivers may be elderly, we ask that you act accordingly and remain patient and understanding of their situation.

Students will work remotely until cleared to go to the office. The office is in a building that currently needs a code to come in.When in the office, students will be supervised more than 50% of the time.

Depending on the task/project student will be working on, their supervisor will vary.
