South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL)

SYRCL unites the community to protect and restore the Yuba River. Motivated by our love for this watershed, we advocate powerfully, engage in active stewardship, educate the public, and inspire activism from the Sierra to the sea. n 1983, a small group of concerned citizens banded together to oppose the construction of two dams on the South Yuba River. Today, the South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL) stands stronger than ever. The dam projects have been defeated and 39 miles of the South Yuba has become permanently protected under Wild and Scenic designation. A small community demonstrated that people can make a difference; people can protect the place in which they live, work, and play. SYRCL now collaborates with national, state, and local agencies on a variety of issues including salmon and steelhead restoration in the Yuba River, non-dam flood control, and water quality monitoring. In addition, SYRCL hosts other annual events for the community, including an auction, conferences, and river cleanups. The South Yuba River Citizens League is a community-based educational nonprofit corporation committed to the protection, preservation and restoration of the entire Yuba Watershed. SYRCL works to fulfill its mission by aggressively seeking environmental solutions through the tools of education, organization, collaboration, litigation and legislation. With 35 years of achievements and with 1,300 active volunteers, SYRCL is now recognized as the largest and most effective single-watershed group in the United States.
