Organization Description

Center for Service Learning, Internships, & Civic Engagement

Mission Statement

The CSUDH Center for Service-Learning, Internships & Civic Engagement (SLICE) is committed to facilitating and fostering quality experiential learning opportunities for students.  We support the development of symbiotic relationships among campus, local communities in the Greater Los Angeles/South Bay areas, and global neighbors of the world community.  SLICE advocates campus contributions of knowledge and skill which promote the quality of life in these communities. We support high impact practices for student success including experiential learning and community based research.  Our work upholds the University Mission in its commitment to “excellence and pluralism in higher education and to further the goals of a democratic society through wide participation and civic responsibility in community, social, and economic affairs.

Program Information

We will train students in emotional management and relationship intelligence skills and particularly in addressing violence with non-violent communication training. Our goal is to have the students then work with high school and perhaps even middle school students in key urban areas to pass along the training. Ideally they might help create youth social-emotional learning pods in other schools so that the students can creatively spread the call of such training universally in local schools.

Health & Safety

Students would not serve at our site. We would train at your school - in other words provide pre-placement training - , assuming that location was possible, or if not at the nearest to campus facilities of one of our member organizations. The students would then be active in local schools, ideally those that your program already has a history of addressing and serving. Any volunteer work work separate from the SEL training would be virtual. .
