Organization Description

The Los Angeles County Bar Association Dispute Resolution Services (DRS) is now the Center for Civic Mediation!

We continue to provide outstanding community and youth services under the new name, assisting more individuals, schools, organizations and families to peacefully address and resolve conflict.

Be sure to check out the Center for Civic Mediation's website (www.centerforcivicmediation.org) that is an important resource for individuals, schools and community organizations.

THE CENTER FOR CIVIC MEDIATION was originally established by the Los Angeles County Bar Association as the Neighborhood Justice Center, one of the first three Community Mediation centers in the country. The Center for Civic Mediation helps individuals, families, and communities to resolve conflicts through mediation, facilitation, and other problem-solving methods. The Center provides mediation and conflict resolution training, education, and coaching that prepares people with the skills to constructively address disputes in personal, community, and work settings. The Center for Civic Mediation partners and works collaboratively with local governments, schools, social service agencies, law enforcement, and courts as well as private and public organizations and businesses. Program Information

There are a variety of ways that volunteers can help the Center for Civic Mediation advance its mission. Please let us know of your interest by submitting the form below.

Volunteer Mediator/Conciliator

  • Assist the public to resolve all manner of disputes. Provide neutral intervention, fact finding, conciliation, mediation and facilitation services to settle disputes as alternatives to litigation.

Information, Referral and Outreach Volunteer

  • Answer phones, conduct initial intake, provide information about Center services and make referrals to other agencies as appropriate.
  • Provide public information on Center services and the benefits of mediation by engaging in outreach activities, and making presentations to community groups.

Peer Mediation Program Volunteer

  • Assist Program Coordinator in daily operation of the Peer Mediation Program on a school campus, including recruitment, oversight of student mediations and assisting in core and refresher trainings.
  • Provide support in Conflict Resolution Education workshops and on field trips.

General Office Volunteer

  • Provide general reception and administrative support in the Center’s downtown office.
  • Support program and event planning and implementation.

Those who can, do. Those who can do more, volunteer.

In June 2010, the Center held a Volunteer Appreciation breakfast for all of our incredible volunteers whose contributions have improved the lives of others. Sharing food and stories, insight and support, it was a perfect opportunity to say a heartfelt “Thank You” for the dedication and enthusiasm they display. The simple truth is, we cannot do it without our volunteers and we look for regular opportunities to lavish them with the praise and gratitude they deserve!

Internships

The Center for Civic Mediation offers internships in both its Community and Youth Services programs. Interns have the opportunity to get involved in one or more focus areas: case management, program development and community outreach initiatives. In addition, interns may conduct school-based research projects. These projects are developed collaboratively with the Center’s Assistant Director and/or Executive Director and are related to the organization’s program goals and objectives.

Together, interns and Center staff develop a written agreement that details goals, responsibilities and projects for which the student will be responsible during the internship period.

Interns must be currently enrolled in a university graduate or undergraduate program and must complete an agreed upon number of hours as negotiated by the student’s home institution and the Center (typically a minimum of 100 hours). Each intern will be
supervised by an experienced staff member.
