Organization Description

East Bay Family Defenders (EBFD) opened our doors to 1,200 clients on September 1, 2018. Our mission is to keep families together and minimize the time children spend in foster care. We are building a cutting-edge, interdisciplinary family defense practice -- the first of its kind in the San Francisco Bay Area. We provide innovative legal defense, social work support, and peer mentorship to all indigent parents, and some children, facing child welfare intervention in Alameda County. We advocate for systemic change to reduce system intervention in families and promote community-based preventive resources and restorative solutions that meaningfully strengthen families. We partner with a robust network of community-based providers and allied advocates, drawing upon their expertise to address families’ complex needs.

Program Information

Parents in Juvenile Dependency Court face allegations of child maltreatment, ranging from neglect to abuse, filed by the Department of Children and Family Services, often resulting in the Court’s removal of children into foster care. Our attorneys provide dedicated, zealous client-directed legal defense while addressing underlying issues that brought the family into the child welfare system. Attorney collaboration with in-house social work and parent advocate staff enhances achievement of client goals. Our teams strive to reduce foster care entries, shorten lengths of stay in foster care, promote frequent and high quality visiting arrangements, and ensure that families receive services that are well-tailored to expediting safe and lasting reunification.
