Organization Description

At Ground Education we passionately believe all children should dig in the dirt, grown their own food, and taste their hard work. Our award-winning outdoor education program provides elementary and middle-school students in the Long Beach Unified School District with hands-on, monthly, garden-based lessons during the school day that encourage collaboration, observation, experimentation, and meaningful connections to nature. We are looking for interns to help support garden lessons in several local elementary schools. If you are interested in education, this is a great opportunity to work in multiple schools with students of varying ages.

Program Information

Interns will accompany senior educators to local elementary schools and help facilitate garden-based classes. These on-site days may involve manual labor such as turning compost, watering, weeding, planting, and carrying lesson supplies. Interns will work directly with groups of elementary students to deliver Ground Education curriculum. Training will be provided. Responsibilities may include any of the following:  Teaching garden lessons  Planting and routine garden maintenance activities (mulching, weeding, irrigation repair)  Native habitat restoration work (including lesson development)  Preparing supplies for lesson days  Social media and/or website support  Non-Profit grant research  Developing/enhancing lesson plans Interns should have a desire to work with children to help cultivate an interest in nature as well as an interest in teaching, gardening, and sustainability. A strong work ethic that includes dependability, punctuality, and a collaborative mindset is a must. You must have your own transportation.
