Hayward Area Forum for the Arts dba Sun Gallery

Organization Description

Mission Statement and Goals: Sun Gallery's mission is to provide visual and performing art exhibitions and educational programs that reflect the diverse cultural populations of Hayward and its surrounding area; and to provide programs that welcome and engage audiences of all ages in order to enhance the relationship between the arts and day to day life experiences. Sun Gallery fulfills its mission by offering exhibits and educational programs that invite the community into the gallery through interesting, affordable programs that can include the entire family. We frequently curate group exhibitions to maximize audience exposure to a range of artists and media. Sun Gallery's art education program for youth, which is unique in our region, engages students with fine arts by combining gallery exposure and hands-on activities in our art studio. We offer up to eight field trips a week during some shows, and schedule nine weekly sessions of Summer Art Day Camp. An important community outreach is our free Saturday Art for Families. This program was developed to welcome Hayward's diverse population into the gallery's studio through art-making activities for parents and children twice a month.

Intern description Cal-State East Bay: We do alot of multi-tasking in our roles at the Sun Gallery. An intern with us can expect to be asked to do several things (depending on interns skill level) which may include: answering phones, talking to the public about our programs, assisting teachers with art classes and field trips, making sketch books, working on direct mail campaigns such as fundraising and membership drives, adding members to computer lists and possibly making labels for artwork (depends on computer skill levels), assisting Gallery manager with light housekeeping (vacuum, clean, sweep) Interns will help with setting up Artists Receptions (providing help, setting up food, cleaning up, interacting with guests), documenting events (may include photography, posting on social media, entering into database - depending on skill level of intern), helping curate exhibits (provide help hanging and preparing exhibit postcards for mailing), if intern has QuickBooks skills they may be asked to do data entry and run simple reports. If they have research skills they may be asked to help find and help put together grant opportunities for the gallery. Interns may also assist during special art workshops held in our art studio (set-up, dry canvases, clean up) May be asked to scan, print and make copies of flyers, sales and lists. With higher skill levels, an intern may be placed as an administrative assistant to the Executive Director which will include learning about all phases of running a non-profit.
