Cancer Support Community San Francisco Bay Area

Organization Description

We support people facing cancer in our community to become healthier, live longer, and live better. Cancer Support Community provides comprehensive integrative care — including counseling, support groups, nutrition, exercise and patient education programs — for people with cancer and their families or caregivers. Our services enable cancer patients to partner with their treatment team to manage their treatment and recovery most effectively, increase their chances for survival, reduce their chances of recurrence, and provide for the highest possible quality of life. We never turn anyone away, and all of our services are always provided free of charge in order to be readily accessible to people facing cancer in their time of need. We now serve 2,000 cancer patients and their families each year. All of our programs and services are evidence-based to positively impact cancer treatment outcomes and/or immune system functioning, and they are all delivered by professionals who are licensed or certified in their area of expertise. Our main center is in Walnut Creek. We also provide services in local medical centers and in several other community locations throughout the Bay Area.

Program Information

Two opportunities identified for fall 2019 semester: 1. help create and execute a "grand opening" marketing plan for our extension site in Antioch, opening by November 2019. This will involve a combination of strategic marketing, communications, event planning, and fundraising strategy. The output will be a marketing/communications plan for our grand opening, and the candidate may participate in the grand opening events if appropriate and desired. 2. help create a marketing/communications plan and strategic fundraising plan for activities celebrating Cancer Support Community's 30th anniversary in 2020. The output will include descriptions of events, activities, and communications timeline during 2020 for the staff to implement. Ongoing opportunities for future service learning opportunities: - fundraising plan development - major event planning and execution - research (surveys) and analysis - marketing and communication planning and execution

Health & Safety

We have cancer patients on site, so employees are asked to stay home if they are feeling sick and to avoid wearing any scented products (such as perfumes). On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, employees part across a main street because our parking lot overflows; there is a crosswalk with a traffic light.
