Organization Description

SHIELDS For Families, Inc. is a comprehensive community-based agency, which provides services to children, adults, and families who live in South Los Angeles. Through our various programs, SHIELDS serves 5000 families annually. SHIELDS employs 500 full-time employees and consultants, with an annual budget of over $25 million to operate 39 programs, including DMH-contracted mental health services, substance abuse treatment programs for adults and adolescents, housing, family preservation, transportation, vocational training, healthy start, assessment center, and after-school enrichment programs. SHIELDS programs provide for a continuum of comprehensive services that address the needs of the entire family.

Program Information

Students at our agency are provided a well-rounded and structured training experience, including orientation trainings, monthly in-service trainings on various clinical topics, and both individual and group clinical supervision. As a DMH-contracted provider agency, interns will receive training and practical experience on the completion of Department on Mental Health paperwork as well as a working knowledge of diagnoses and the DSM-V. Students will have the opportunity to utilize individual, family, and group therapy modalities as well as training on crisis intervention, work with co-occurring disorders, and brief and long-term therapy models. Interns will be exposed to a range of theoretical orientations during their internship
