Alameda County Community Food Bank

Organization Description

Through a network of 240 strategically placed member agencies - food pantries, soup kitchens, child-care centers, senior centers, after-school programs and other community-based organizations -– the Food Bank distributes enough food for 380,000 meals weekly. Our systematic approach to alleviating hunger includes:

One of California’s busiest – and most efficient – emergency food helplines
■A multilingual CalFresh (formerly known as food stamps) outreach program which serves as the blueprint for programs across the nation
Dynamic hunger and nutrition education programs
■An innovative advocacy program that promotes policies to benefit low-income residents

A nonprofit organization, the Alameda County Community Food Bank affiliations include Feeding America, California Association of Food Banks and the California Hunger Action Coalition.

Program Information

Volunteers are vital part of the Food Bank's efforts to help the 1 in 6 Alameda County residents we serve – including children, senior and entire families. Our warehouse and office are abuzz with hunger relief activity, and your help is needed more than ever. In 2013, more than 13,000 volunteers were instrumental in helping us distribute more than 2 million pounds of food per month! Work is performed primarily in an active warehouse environment; there will be pallet jacks and forklifts moving about and equipment and materials being staged for food packaging activities. Here's how you can help: Weekday Food Sorting (our greatest need!) Individuals and groups are needed Monday - Friday to help sort, screen and box fresh produce and non-perishable food for distribution to the Food Bank’s partner agencies. Weekend Food Sorting Join us on a weekend to sort, screen and box food for distribution! Emergency Food Helpline Help households find same-day sources of food in their own neighborhood! General Office Help General clerical help is an ongoing need for us. May include preparing mailings, phone calls, data entry, filing, and special projects. Our office hours are Monday-Friday, 9 am-5 pm. Please email us at volunteer@accfb.org for more information. Please note that office projects are not available every day. Organize a Food Drive! It’s easy, it’s fun and helps your community! We have been experiencing a shortage of donated food and need your help. Please consider organizing a Food Drive at your work, school, church or with your community group. We’ll supply everything you’ need. Call 510-635-3663, ext. 318 or email us for more information. Advocate! Get political and help address hunger at its root cause. (click to see more) WAIVER: Groups and individuals will need to complete a waiver form, which we will have at the start of your shift or orientation.
