Oakland Asian Cultural Center

Organization Description

Founded in 1984, OACC builds vibrant communities through Asian and Pacific Islander American (APIA) arts and culture programs that foster intergenerational and cross-cultural dialogue, cultural identity, collaborations, and social justice. Located in the heart of Oakland Chinatown, the center provides a diverse array of engaging public programs and classes. Visit www.oacc.cc to learn more.

Program Information

OACC is looking for volunteers to research and develop online educational resources for 2nd-5th grade students to replace our usual school tour program. Since the Bay Area shelter-in-place was implemented in March 2020, OACC's facility had to close completely and all onsite activities were suspended immediately and indefinitely. We are hoping to develop API cultural and arts content that 2nd-5th grade students can access remotely and attain a greater understanding of the local history and legacy of API communities in their own backyard. Current priorities are 1) to complete a printable, engaging, activity booklet and 2) publish several virtual walking tours of Oakland Chinatown utilizing a free tool like Google Maps.

Health & Safety

OACC facility is entirely closed to the public at this time due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19. This volunteer opportunity is intended to be entirely virtual. If absolutely necessary, OACC can arrange limited availability of our office space for the volunteer(s), but it is highly preferable for the student to conduct work from their residence (internet/wi-fi, laptop, ability to work independently, etc).
