Program Information

Overview of Colusa County SELPA:

  • Services Offered: Comprehensive services for students from birth to age 21 with disabilities, following federal or state guidelines. 

  • Settings: Services provided throughout school districts within Colusa County.

  • Mental Health Support: Includes individual counseling, social work services, consultations, mental health assessments, and case management.

  • Focus: Services are specifically for students requiring Educationally Related Mental Health Services (ERMHS), as determined by their IEP team. 

MSW Mental Health Practicum Intern Role:

  • Supervision: The intern will be supervised by a Mental Health Clinician, with potential additional oversight from a task supervisor depending on the site.

  • Responsibilities:

    • Assist in developing IEP goals.

    • Maintain clinical documentation.

    • Participate in IEP meetings.

    • Collaborate with staff on behavior support for students.

    • Support the development, coordination, and facilitation of in-service and on-site training for staff and/or parents/guardians on a range of mental health and social-emotional topics.

Health & Safety

1. Emergency Procedures: Familiarity with the site's emergency procedures, including fire drills, earthquake drills, lockdowns, and evacuation plans.

2. Infectious Disease Protocols: Adherence to protocols for preventing the spread of infectious diseases, including COVID-19 guidelines, hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and managing symptoms of illness.

3. Physical Safety: Awareness of potential physical hazards in the environment, such as sharp objects, slippery floors, and safe use of equipment. This includes ensuring that all equipment used is in good condition and appropriately maintained.

4. Student Supervision: Ensuring proper supervision of students at all times to prevent accidents or injuries, particularly during activities that may pose a risk.

5. Behavioral Safety: Understanding and implementing appropriate behavior management strategies to prevent harm to students, staff, and themselves, particularly when working with students who may exhibit aggressive or self-injurious behaviors.

6. First Aid and CPR: Basic knowledge of first aid and CPR, with access to first aid kits and the ability to respond to minor injuries or medical emergencies until professional help arrives.

7. Confidentiality and Privacy: Adhering to policies regarding the confidentiality of student information, including the secure handling of records and discussions related to student health and safety.

8. Accessibility and Accommodations: Ensuring that the site is accessible to all students, including those with physical disabilities, and providing necessary accommodations as outlined in their IEPs.

9. Cultural Sensitivity: Being aware of and respectful toward the diverse cultural backgrounds of students and their families, which may influence their health practices and perceptions of safety.

10. Mental Health Considerations: Recognizing signs of mental health crises and knowing the appropriate steps to take in providing support or seeking additional help.

11. Bullying and Harassment Prevention: Understanding and enforcing policies related to the prevention of bullying and harassment to maintain a safe and supportive environment for all students.

12. Site-Specific Risks: Awareness of any site-specific risks, such as proximity to traffic, construction zones, or other environmental hazards, and taking steps to mitigate these risks.

13. Transportation Safety: Ensuring that all transportation of students, whether on buses or other vehicles, complies with safety regulations and includes proper supervision and seating arrangements.

14. Child Abuse Reporting: Knowledge of mandatory reporting laws and the procedure for reporting suspected child abuse or neglect.
