Organization Description

The Monterey County Rape Crisis Center (MCRCC) is a nonprofit agency whose mission is to provide ongoing advocacy, support and healing for all victims and survivors of sexual assault, human trafficking and child abuse; and to prevent sexual violence in our community through education. Vision All individuals in Monterey County will treat each other with respect and feel empowered to make safe, healthy choices towards ending sexual violence. Who We Serve The Monterey County Rape Crisis Center serves people of all races, cultures, religions, incomes and political affiliations impacted by sexual assault, child abuse, and human trafficking. MCRCC clients include, but are not limited to: seniors; children; monolingual Spanish speakers; individuals experiencing homelessness; transgender and queer folks; lesbian, gay, bisexual, and asexual individuals; people who identify outside the gender binary; current and former foster youth; documented and undocumented immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers; people with disabilities; and people experiencing incarceration. MCRCC believes survivors and in the right to heal on one’s own terms. Our services will always be available when the survivor is ready, whether that is in the immediate aftermath of violence committed against them or years later. MCRCC also serves people connected to survivors, because we acknowledge the trauma of sexual violence can impact entire families, across generations, and communities. Significant others can include but are not limited to: spouses, parents, guardians, caregivers, siblings, intimate partners, friends, and other family members. History The Monterey Rape Crisis Center was founded in 1973. In 2007, services expanded to include the entirety of Monterey County and we changed our name to the Monterey County Rape Crisis Center to reflect the entire area we serve.

Program Information

The Monterey County Rape Crisis Center offers a 47+ hour state certified training to become a Sexual Assault Counselor. During the training you will learn about crisis intervention and advocacy, community resources, the reporting process, collaboration with other agencies on behalf of survivors, and best practices when working with survivors of sexual assault, human trafficking, and child abuse; and their significant others. The training is offered twice a year in the Spring and Fall. Eligibility and Commitment: Applicants must be over the age of 18 years of age. Applicants must have an interest in assisting sexual assault survivors and significant others. Applicants must be willing/able to work with diverse populations (cultural, racial, socioeconomic, religious, sexual orientation, etc.) Applicants must give consent for and understand that MCRCC will require Livescan fingerprinting. Applicants must be able to attend all training sessions. Applicants must be able to attend monthly in-service meetings (typically the 1st Tuesday of the month). Applicants must commit to 6 months of volunteering. Applicants must commit to covering 2 shifts per month. Available shifts are typically nights, weekends, and holidays. Past or present perpetrators of sexual or physical abuse and/or any violent crime are not eligible to participate in Sexual Assault Counselor Training. Applicants with a history of chemical dependency must have been clean and sober for at least 1 year prior to training. Sexual assault survivors must be emotionally ready to assist other survivors and be no less than a year past their own assault / abuse experience. MCRCC reserves the right to refuse enrollment to anyone whom they feel is not suitable for the program. Participation in training does not guarantee certification as a Sexual Assault Counselor, nor does it guarantee a volunteer assignment.

Office hours for Monterey County Rape Crisis Center are Mon - Fri 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Helpline (Crisis Line) operates 24/7 - 365 day a year. Manned by trained and certified volunteer Sexual Assault Counselors/Advocates. Staff operates this line between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM Mon-Fri. Volunteers are responsible at all other times: 5:00 PM - 9:00 AM week nights and mornings, weekends and holidays. SART activation hotline is also in operation 24/7, 365 days a year. Staffed by trained and certified Staff and volunteers. Volunteers are responsible at all other times: 5:00 PM - 9:00 AM week nights and mornings, weekends and holidays. All staff and volunteers are in working from home for the foreseeable future, due to COVID restrictions.
