Just Like a Mom

Organization Description

'Just Like a Mom' seeks to employ and partner with women who can relate to the culture of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) students and their families. We understand that one's racial assignment, a social construct, does not mitigate one's ability to experience another's dominant culture and to be able to meet the needs of underserved students and their families.

Program Information

Liaison between African American families and school. Identify possible resources families might need and coordinate with counselor (Where applicable, not all sites have a counselor), VP and Wicondra. Facilitate small group after school. Small group can be specific to parents or students (Depending upon the site). Initiate contact with family. Participate in Back to School Night & Open House. Conduct home visits as necessary. Observe assigned students in multiple settings: classroom, lunch room and recess. Document all actions with students/families and share with administrative team weekly.

Health & Safety

I would not say this is a safety consideration, but it should probably be noted that the communities that Ara's serves are by design underprivileged and may be uncomfortable for students either unfamiliar or uninterested in working in urban communities which are at times, not the safest. With the return of school, students will be expected to work at the school site with very limited, if at all, home visits to families if this information is useful.

Additional requirements and/or considerations
  • Background Check (e.g. fingerprinting/livescan, driving record)
  • TB Test
