Service Learning OpportunitiesAt — Youth Pride Association
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) students are a historically underserved population in educational institutions. They face an increased rate of depression, anxiety, harassment, assault, self-harm, hate crimes, homelessness, and substance abuse, to name a few. This program aims to provide additional support to LGBTQ students in higher education, through peer mentorship. This program works with existing campus mental health resoruces to provide this program to LGBTQ students who need additional peer support. YPA provides students seeking additional support with a Peer Advocate, an often LGBTQ individual who is experienced with the unique hardships and adversities LGBTQ students are faced with. Peer Advocates go through rigorous training and certification, in order to best support these students, and work using a variety of methods to provide students with support, advocacy, and education that meets their individualistic needs.
Students will learn about the level of impact individuals and communities have on the experiences of minority populations, specifically LGBTQ individuals. Students will also learn how to assess the needs, experiences, and adversities of LGBTQ individuals. They will learn skills and knowledge on different methods on how to best support each other.
Students will receive asynchronous training and 2 hours of synchronous onboarding and training for the program. For this program, students will be working virtually with populations at an increased risk for self-harm, and students will receive training and certification through the QPR institute to handle suicide assessment and intervention.
