Service Learning OpportunitiesAt — Camarillo Health Care District
Depending on which department the student will be placed with, they could be making a positive impact in the following programs:
- Senior Support Line - make an impact on social isolation by working our telephonic wellness check program designed for isolated and/or lonely older adults in Ventura County - we have a roster of clients we call each day (M-F).
- Senior Nutrition Program - make an impact on food insecurity and social isolation by assisting with the delivery of bundle meals/food bags to home-bound older adults in Camarillo. This includes possibly assisting with the preparation of meal bags (no cooking is required), performing telephonic assessments among other tasks and duties.
- Adult Day Center - help participants with activities during the day
- Additional opportunities may be available and are subject to change.
1) How to engage and communicate with the older adult population.
2) The impact that the social determinants of health have on one's wellbeing.
3) Resources available at the District and outside of the District to assist people in aging in place.
In whichever program the student is placed, they will receive an orientation about the District (what we do and who we serve; programs and services we offer; how our services connect to other programs and so on). Students will then also receive a detailed orientation and training for the specific program they are placed. They will shadow the professionals in that department as part of the training process.
If in the adult day center, many of the clients who attend are living with a form of dementia. The student would be provided with detailed orientation and information on how to work with and be sensitive to someone with a form of dementia.
