The City of Berkeley Parks Recreation & Waterfront Department – Recreation Division, offers a wide variety of programs, activities, classes, camps, and events for City of Berkeley Residents and non-residents. The Recreation Division employs approximately 24 full-time career personnel, as well as hundreds of part-time employees, and manages multiple community centers, aquatics facilities, a world-renowned adventure playground, nature center, remote residential camp properties, and administrative offices. Berkeley’s Recreation Division staff run programs and activities that serve thousands of participants annually. Offering aquatics, afterschool programs, in-town fun camps, remote sleepaway camps, teens, tots, and adult programming, cultural enrichment & educational classes, workshops, city-wide special events, environmental education, therapeutic recreation, and sports programs, the Division has a long history of offering programs for all ages with a special focus on ensuring diverse, equitable, and inclusive access for all Residents. Interns working for the City of Berkeley Recreation Division will have the opportunity to work directly within focused program areas or on special projects supporting Division wide operations. Depending upon their internship goals and objectives and their desired focus area, interns may assist with coordinating afterschool programs, planning and implementing city-wide special events, coordinating and running remote residential camp programs, assisting with administrative operations or policy & procedure development, or other special projects.
The primary goal of this internship opportunity is to assist the Recreation Division with efforts to improve Diverse, Equitable, and Inclusive access to all program areas, including the City's remote Camps and in-town aquatics programs.
Interns will receive a variety of safety training, site orientations, program specific training (e.g. aquatics, sports, recreation, administration, etc), and project specific training. This may include one-on-one coaching, organizational training, or site specific group training.
Interns will be required to complete site specific workplace safety training at beginning of internship.
