Cultural Broker for African American Students and FamiliesAt — Just Like a Mom

Opportunity Summary 

If you have a specific desire to primarily work with African American students and families, this might be the internship opportunity for you. With a foundation in Black othermothering, a framework utilized in the teaching of many Black teachers, in this role you will provide African American students with emotional support by being a listening ear and providing comfort during challenging moments, providing navigational support by functioning as a liaison from home to school when necessary and by culturally, being able to relate to African American students and families as only 7 percent of the teaching population is comprised of Black teachers. Students will be required to provide in-class support as well as out-of-class support on the blacktop, playground and lunch room. To best serve as a cultural broker, it is important to get to know the students, so interaction is key.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

By the end of this opportunity, students will have a deeper understanding of how Black women have utilized care for their own children as well as other children, and how this has served as a framework to support the African American community throughout history. Students will have learned how to partner with individuals from differing backgrounds (i.e. teachers, parents and students), serving as a liaison between the three or at times, more entities. Students will gain an objective perspective of various racial nuances that at times, unfortunately occur within the classroom and learn how to navigate and advocate for Black students as necessary. Students will have learned the importance of maintaining confidentiality and relationship building with all parties.

Opportunity Training 

Students will be required to attend a 2-day training prior to the start of the internship and weekly check-ins with the supervisor for guidance and support.
