Salinas Community Science Workshop

Organization Description

Our non-profit is an experiential learning environment for students to engage in STEAM exploration through building and hands-on projects. The Salinas Community Science Workshop hosts multiple programs including after-school workshops, elementary school class visits, STEAM Gxrls, teacher professional development and field trips.

Our mission is to provide a free community space where kids and their families can go to create the projects of their imaginations and explore the physical and natural world. Through our programming we address historic barriers our East Salinas community faces in terms of access to STEAM and experiential education.

Program Information

Class Visits: 6 elementary schools, grades 4, 5, and 6 are scheduled to visit our workshop multiple times a semester. Each class joins us for 90-minute sessions with a project of the day designed to meet grade level and NGSS standards. Projects in the past varied from building mini-Newton's cradles, slime-kits, thermometers, and more!

Drop-In Hours: Based out of El Sausal Middle School in Salinas, Ca. We host afterschool open workshop hours Mon/Fri 2:50 - 6:00 pm and Wed 1:50 -5:00 pm. Our workshop holds a variety of hand tools and low-tech power tools from hammers to scroll saws, and materials from a variety of woods and basic construction materials.

STEAM Gxrls: A drop in lunch time session for female,non-binary, and trans students to engage in pre-selected STEAM projects. The sessions run 40 minutes in length with a range of 5-10 participants. This semester's curriculum is highly influenced by environmental science and conservation.

STEAM Science Kits: We serve a variety of schools within the Alisal Union School District, Salinas City Elementary School District, and Salinas Union Highschool District. Our program develops, prototypes, packages and delivers science kits to schools within this district, and is a core programming of our organization.
