Service Learning OpportunitiesAt — School on Wheels
Volunteer tutors will attend a virtual intro training, complete a phone interview, and a Livescan background check. They will then work with a coordinator to be matched with a student, either online (grades K-12) or in-person to meet with weekly to offer academic support and mentoring encouragement.
1) Developing outreach and awareness campaigns directed at volunteer recruitment from different communities (faith, retirement, LGBTQ, etc.).
2) Develop alternative learning or enrichment projects for at-risk teens in the foster care system (including, but not limited to stress management, career planning, goal-setting, etc.).
3) Analyze systems and processes to make recommendations for volunteer retention, learning outcomes.
4) Develop interactive lesson plans and enrichment activities for children and teens.
School on Wheels is also interested in working directly with faculty from varied disciplines to build service-learning projects that support course outcomes.
Volunteer student tutors will learn how to provide weekly academic tutoring using a grade level appropriate program and will learn how to offer support and encouragement using our SEL trainings. Volunteer interns will learn how to conduct student, partner, and school district outreach to spread the word about School on Wheels.
Students will learn about the mission, services, and population this organization serves and the issues that impact this population.
Students will be trained by the coordinator, volunteer tutors will participate in an intro and advanced training session.
We require all in-person tutors to be vaccinated and boosted and all shelter staff to provide their own safety guidelines.
