Artificial Intelligence in Medical Systems (AIMS) Internship ProgramAt — Oregon Health & Science University / AIMS Lab
The student will be exploring bias in artificial intelligence algorithms developed by the AIMS Lab at OHSU particularly in the field of diabetes technologies. If algorithmic bias is identified, the student will work on implementing or developing new bias removal methods. The applicant will attend Lab meetings and will be responsible to present his/her work and findings.
1) Identify bias and implement/develop methods for algorithmic bias correction in machine learning with applications to medicine. 2) Scientific communication skills including presenting results in oral talks and on manuscripts. 3) Improve data science skills.
The AIMS Internship Program creates opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students with an emphasis on recruiting underrepresented minority groups to participate in world-class research at the intersection of artificial intelligence and medical systems design and development. While interns will learn many aspects of machine learning with applications towards medicine, one specific focus of an AIMS internship will be to explore how racial, gender, or other bias impacts the performance of machine learning algorithms. Participants will benefit from journal clubs, machine learning reading meetings, 1:1 mentorship, code reviews, and other organized training activities such as data science workshops. The duration of the internship is 8 weeks.
