Power Over Parkinson's

Organization Description

Power Over Parkinson’s is dedicated to enhance the lives of those in our community affected by the disease.  We raise funds to provide availability and frequent access to exercise programs and resources.

Power Over Parkinson's was formed in 2017 with the purpose of raising funds to enhance the lives of those i our community affected by the disease and support availability, frequency and access to Parkinson's specific exercise through an ongoing wellness program.

Program Information

Our organization offers exercise classes to people with Parkinson's disease and their caregivers/partners. It’s great if you have related experience but not required. The only requirements are your willingness to learn, be hands on, assist people with exercises, have fun and interact cheerfully with other people. Your primary role in the classes is to ensure safety of our class participants. Some folks need a little bit of guidance or assistance with exercises or may have balance issues and require someone to help them get around. Our members are super fun and caring people and really enjoy having college students in the classes.

Your commitment would be ~3 hours per week (minimum 2 classes per week) and would require you to be able to get yourself to the studio located at 2555 Garden Road, Monterey, CA (near the Monterey airport). You are expected to arrive at least 5 minutes prior to class starting and assist with cleaning equipment after the class finishes. We offer classes Monday through Friday and you will speak with the site supervisor to help schedule the classes you will be involved with. You can view our class schedule at https://www.poweroverparkinsons.org/classes.html

Health & Safety

Our COVID protocols: Every member, instructor, and volunteer is required to be vaccinated and provide proof of vaccination and booster if you are eligible. We are sticklers for cleaning so any surfaces or equipment that are touched are cleaned immediately after class is completed. You are expected to assist with these procedures. We have two air purifiers and hand sanitizer throughout the studio. Right now, everyone is required to wear masks. We have been following CDC guidelines since opening in July. When masks were not required indoors, instructors and volunteers were still required to wear masks. All members were free to choose whether or not they wanted to wear masks so if the mask requirement is lifted at any point, instructors and volunteers will still be required to wear masks. We ask that you provide your own mask but will have KN95 masks available in the event that you do not have one. We also have rubber gloves for anyone who wants to use them along with hand sanitizer. We have not been made aware of any COVID cases within our members since opening.
